Elon Musk has lots to say about autonomous vehicle capability and Tesla.
Before the half-hour discussion broached the main topic, it began with talk about electric vehicle sales estimates five years out. Basing their figure solely on projected battery prices from their analyst Sam Korus, they suggested a fold increase in EV sales globally by This bullish figure would mean a third of global sales would be electric by then. Musk said this sounded reasonable, though added it could be off by a year or two.
Having said that, though, he then proceeded to suggest Tesla could produce as many as 1. When the conversation turned to vehicle autonomy, things got a lot more interesting and featured more bold predictions. He goes on to state he is very certain of that progress -- he explains that he directly manages the Autopilot and engineering every week in detail -- but clarifies that doesn't mean it will be perfect or not need human oversight.
Musk goes on to say that he believes the vehicles will be able to self-drive without human intervention by the end of next year -- In any case, the next two years promise to be exciting ones for fans of the California automaker and possibly autonomous driving. You can hear the entire podcast below, which has a lot more about why Musk is confident in his approach over others.

General Elon Musk Autonomous Vehicles.Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system that enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel.
When used properly, Autopilot reduces your overall workload as a driver. Cars built between September and October include one camera and less-powerful radar and ultrasonic sensors.
Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability are intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment. While these features are designed to become more capable over time, the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous. Available packages include:.
The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The activation and use of these features are dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions.
As these self-driving features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates. Before using Autopilot, please read your Owner's Manual for instructions and more safety information. While using Autopilot, it is your responsibility to stay alert, keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times and maintain control of your car.
Many of our Autopilot features, like Autosteer, Navigate on Autopilot and Summon, are disabled by default. To enable them, you must go to the Autopilot Controls menu within the Settings tab and turn them on. In Model 3, pull down once on the gear selector stalk on the right of the steering column.
Autosteer To engage Autosteer in Model S and Model X, pull towards you twice on the cruise control stalk on the left of the steering column.
In Model 3, pull down twice on the gear selector stalk on the right of the steering column. A grey steering wheel icon will appear on your display, next to the speedometer, when the system is available to engage. A blue steering wheel icon will appear on your display, next to the speedometer, when Autosteer is engaged. When Autosteer is in use, it measures the amount of torque that you apply to the steering wheel and, if insufficient torque is applied, an escalating series of audible and visual alerts again reminds you to place your hands on the wheel.
This helps ensure you are attentive and trains good driving habits. If you repeatedly ignore these warnings, then you will be locked out from using Autopilot for the duration of that trip.
Navigate on Autopilot Navigate on Autopilot is designed to get you to your destination more efficiently by actively guiding your car from on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting and making lane changes, navigating highway interchanges, and taking exits. Camera calibration will be required and the latest version of Navigation maps must be downloaded via WiFi.
On Model 3, Navigate on Autopilot can be engaged on most highways by moving the gear lever twice downwards, in quick succession. On Model S and Model X, Navigate on Autopilot can be engaged on most highways by pulling the cruise stalk toward you, twice in quick succession. Then when the car is in Autosteer, a driver must engage the turn signal in the direction that they would like to move. Autopark If your car sees a parking spot, a grey 'P' icon will appear on the left or right hand side of your instrument panel, depending on the location of the space.
Autopark detects parallel parking locations when driving below 15mph and perpendicular parking locations when driving below 10mph. Autopark will then begin to maneuver the vehicle into the parking space by controlling your cars speed, gear changes and steering angle, but you should remember to be alert and monitor the backup camera view to check for obstacles.
Summon To use Summon, open the Tesla app. Press Summon and then press the forward or reverse buttons. Summon also integrates with HomeLink and will open your garage door to pull your car out of the garage. Smart Summon Smart Summon is designed to allow your car to drive to you or a location of your choosing, maneuvering around and stopping for objects as necessary.
Like Summon, Smart Summon is only intended for use in private parking lots and driveways. Be especially careful around quick moving people, bicycles and cars. You can stop your car from driving at any time by releasing the button.Fred Lambert. This weekend, Musk hinted that it could make the difference. The goal of Dojo will be to be able to take in vast amounts of data and train at a video level and do unsupervised massive training of vast amounts of video with the Dojo program — or Dojo computer.
Currently, labeling visual data is a difficult task and most neural net systems are using image frame processing to feed its network, but it sounds like Dojo would instead be able to handle videos on its own, which would give a lot more context to the data and could train the network in different and more complexed contexts faster. I can see project Dojo making the difference for Tesla to achieve full self-driving on a more aggressive timeline than competitors. It will be able to go through the almost infinite number of corner cases that we encounter in vehicles much quicker and also adapt faster as more data is coming in.

The CEO said about the term during an earnings call last year:. So it will still be supervised, but it will be able to drive — it will fill in the gap from low-speed autonomy with Summon.

The early access program is a now quite large group of Tesla owners who get new software updates early in exchange for providing feedback to Tesla. If it still has to go through the EAP, it may be an update that stays in the program for a long time. However, since it will still require human intervention and supervision, it kind of has a similar purpose in the EAP and the wider release.
Just like Tesla asking feedback to its early access owners, the automaker is going to use data from its large fleet of customers using the new feature in order to improve — eventually maybe enough to not require driver interventions or supervision. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.

The stop signs and stoplight visualizations are not a substitute for an attentive driver and will not stop the car.
Tesla YouTuber Raj got the software update and posted a first look at the new Tesla driving visualizations and the other new features:. In order for Tesla to have all the pieces in place for self-driving, Tesla has to add city driving to Autopilot, which is currently meant for highway driving, and the new Smart Summon, which handles low-speed driving in parking.
Therefore, city driving is the missing piece, and in order to achieve it, Tesla needs to navigate intersections. Once it does, Tesla will likely still recommend that drivers stay attentive and be ready to take control at all time, like it does under the current version of Autopilot for highways.
Tesla is starting the wider rollout of the new software update, but the new driving visualization is only working on vehicles with the latest HW3 FSD computer. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. Subscribe to Electrek on YouTube for exclusive videos and subscribe to the podcast.

According to Elon Musk, the option will still be available for about a week "off the menu". Previously, buyers of the Tesla Model 3 could buy in to a future full self driving option.
Reddit users spotted the option was missing earlier today after the announcement of the new mid-range Model 3. Now Elon Musk has addressed the issue. It seems that the option is still available "off menu" for the next week or so. Then will be going away for the time being. Elon Musk just as recently as a few days ago noted that buyers who opted for the full self driving option would be receiving hardware updates.
This naturally led many to believe that the previously alluded to new custom chip might be on the way soon. Last month, an additional Tesla employees also signed up for testing fully autonomous driving. Considering the timing of these previous announcements, the removal of the Model 3 Full Self Driving option might mean that the new hardware change could happen soon.
If the hardware change is imminent, it would make sense to remove the option until it is rolled out. Home Tesla News General. By : Wade Malone. About this article Category General. In addition, once it's ready, there will likely be plenty of hoops to jump through when it comes to regulatory agencies and insurance companies. In the meantime, the extra money they're paying does get them terrific features that they wouldn't have if they didn't pay for the upgrade.
So, the question here is, should you splurge for Tesla Full Self-Driving at this point in time? Model 3 owner Robert Rosenfeld doesn't think so. This may be especially true in these dire economic times brought on by the global pandemic. However, if you can't afford the option or can't justify its current worth, you don't have to add it. You'll still get Tesla Autopilot.
